Huaraches are a traditional Mexican street food named after their sandal-like shape (“huarache” means sandal in Spanish). They are made from thick masa (corn dough), topped with refried beans, meat, salsa, cheese, and fresh garnishes. Crispy on the outside and soft inside—perfect for a hearty meal.

Ingredients

For the base:

a) 2 cups masa harina (corn flour)

b) 1 ¼ cups warm water

c) ½ tsp salt

For topping:

a) 1 cup refried beans

b) 1 cup cooked meat (chicken, beef, or chorizo) (optional)

c) ½ cup salsa (red or green)

d) ½ cup crumbled queso fresco or feta

e) ½ cup shredded lettuce

f) ¼ cup chopped onions

g) 2 tbsp chopped coriander (cilantro)

h) 1 avocado (sliced)

i) Oil for cooking 

How To Make

Step-by-Step

1. Prepare the dough

a) Mix masa harina, warm water, and salt.

b) Knead until soft and smooth (like dough, not sticky).

2. Shape the huaraches

a) Divide into 4 portions.

b) Shape each into an oval (about 5–6 inches long).

c) Slightly flatten and create a small indentation in the center.

d) Spread a thin layer of refried beans inside and fold/close lightly.

3. Cook the base

a) Heat a pan (tawa or skillet).

b) Cook each huarache without oil for 2–3 minutes per side.

c) Once lightly browned, drizzle a little oil and cook until crispy outside.

4. Add toppings

a) Spread extra refried beans on top.

b) Add cooked meat (if using).

c) Spoon salsa over it.

5. Garnish

  • Add lettuce, onions, coriander, cheese, and avocado slices.

How to Serve

Serve hot, fresh off the pan 🔥

Add a squeeze of lime for extra flavor 🍋

  • Fresh salsa or guacamole
